The Chocolate Hills is one of the natural wonders in the world. Geologists believe that the Chocolate Hills were formed from marine limestones on top of a clay layer. These limestones contain the abundant deposits of shallow marine coral, mollusks, algae and foraminifera. The geomorphological features of the conical hills were created by the combination of the dissolution of limestones by rainful, surface water, ground water and their subaerial erosion by rivers and streams after they had been uplifted above the sea level and fractured by tectonic activities.
Chocolate Hills was featured in the Philippine Tourism Authority’s list as a tourist destination. This natural attraction is the third National Geological Monument in the Philippines. Proposals to include the Chocolate Hills in the UNESCO World Heritage Site list are currently being conducted.
